Custom Orthotics

An orthotic is made to treat or adjust abnormal foot motion; provide support, stability and control; increase proprioception; and relieve pressure on uncomfortable or sore spots. Some are generic, pre-molded (over-the-counter) devices for conditions that are not severe. Addressing an individual's specific needs requires a custom-made orthotic specific to their foot and biomechanics. Your feet are the foundation of your body and your foot performance will influence the entire kinetic chain. Stability and efficiency of the foot and ankle promote better foot health and overall body function.

The primary cause of foot problems and conditions is musculoskeletal imbalance. Structural or functional imperfections cause some degree of dysfunction which subjects the foot to excessive stress and strain that can eventually cause pain and deformity. Orthotics aim to correct for the inherent imbalances in the foot, improving function and relieving or preventing the appearance of such symptoms.

There is also evidence orthotics improve athletic performance. Sports place high demands on the feet that are not encountered in normal daily activity so slight imbalances in the foot, which may not be consequential under everyday circumstances, may render you vulnerable to injury in a high-load context. By normalizing biomechanical function of the foot, lower limb and torso, orthotics are able to reduce fatigue and promote the efficient mechanics that are crucial for maximizing performance and preventing injury.

A careful physical exam is performed by one of our chiropractors. Additionally, the patient walks over the state-of-the-art TOG gait scanner which analyzes ground contact and pressure distribution during the gait cycle. Finally, a semi-weight bearing foam cast is obtained so the orthotic can be custom-molded to your unique foot shape.
